laguna seca 2011

the year, 1989, my first time at laguna seca and i am in total awe of the machines before my very eyes that had only raced the year before in 1988 with the return of gran prix bikes back in the u.s.a, machines that up until then were only found in magazines and on broadcasts of races 2 months after they had happened. i had found my spiritual home. the race however was marred by the post race crash of bubba shobert, ending his career as a racer and eliminating the possibility of yet another american world champion.
the sights of exotic 2 strokes, ducatis, and the sounds from those said bikes was as good as any heavy metal show i had ever seen, laguna seca was a mystery and a jewel, an adventure for the motorhead, and escape from the dreary car to car world.
in the following years i would run into and thank eddie lawson for his contributions to the sport, and i would watch the u.s.a. lose the gp once again.
the next few years we would enjoy world superbike, and those years were simply out of control, the 2 race format is hard to beat, and with 1000cc ducatis fighting it out with the fastest 750cc four cylinders, this was still the best show in california. after having stayed in various hotels previously, by the time the sbk show came to town i was camping just above what is now known as rainey curve. the legendary parties are of no fables, and the entertainment on cannery row was a lot of fun too, anyone remember the blue fin? campers that had ventured into "town" had a midnight gate curfew, and i believe the 3rd time camping i made it by 2 minutes, driving sane and safe of course as monterey police are out in force during the racing events.
when word of the return of motoGP was echoed in the racing community, i pre-ordered camping, tickets, pit passes, i was ready this time. the 990 machines were by far the most wicked beasts i had ever seen, far faster than the 500s, i almost felt ripped off as the bikes were gone as fast they got there...
since the return of the u.s. round of motoGP, lodging had swung back to hotels, both good and bad. some of the adventures were borderline nightmares, one year after having driven 400+ miles i arrived at my hotel to discover bank of america had lost my payroll check that had been deposited to a human teller. after 3 hours on the phone BofA agreed the money should be there, re-deposited the funds, explaining that in the morning i would have full access to all my hard earned monies. calling the next morning nearly got me on the news, the funds had been removed from my account.
since that trip i have slept in my element in a secret camping location twice now, and this year was going to be no different. well, i will be camping, but at the track this time, not in the same area as my previous journeys took me, my new camping area will be on the other side of the track, facing turn 2, a new era of lodging has begun.
as soon as i get my area set up i will post about the trip, and after the days events are completed i will upload pics.
i am looking forward to congratulating greg wood on his first motoGP win via his rider ben spies, woody is a really cool guy and obviously a decent good luck charm.
this is going to be fun...

the 2011 daytona 200 miler was won by privateer jason disalvo on board a latus motors racing ducati 848EVO(rick, this is not an atv by the way), breaking what some have come to call the ducati curse, and in his first race on the bike. the racing gnome looked quite happy after the race, good luck to jason and his crew, with no race in southern califronia this year, we wont be able to say good ride in person.
word from the guys at ducati usa is "we are on our way to disneyland, bbl".

world superbike delivers the goods

carlos checa stalked and walked in both legs of the first round of world superbike in australia. marco melandri had an awesome battle with leon haslam for 3rd place, haslam would of course come out on top for the bottom of the box, max biaggi (current world superbike champion) nabbed second ripping around on the v4 aprilia. race 2 the battle was for 2nd place, and at times the bikes were nearly 4 wide, bitchen action that was truly some of the best superbike racing since colin edwards and troy bayliss last battled in the series. this time mad max biaggi and marco melandri would duke it out for the second and third spot on the podium, melandris yamaha would get long tracked by biaggis aprilia at the end of the straight, although biaggi would not gap his italian countryman he did take the second spot in true roman emperor fashion.
all of this racing was delivered commercial free from eurosport, complete with pre race grid shots and plenty of post race stuff as well. the europeans just plain get it right, no bullshit, lots of cool shots you just plain dont get with the crap american coverage. watered down is to put it mildly.
in all the glory of action, the camera focused mainly on the battles behind carlos checa, but when he came into view it reminded me of the way a certain carl fogarty worked his craft on the good old 916 ducati. go checa!

nothing like flogging a dead horse, while i would much rather blog about woody and what he might be up to now that ben spies has taken over valentinos ride on the factory yamaha team, or rossi for that matter on the ducati 1198sp at misano, that would be far more interesting. nope this is the stinky dead horse whipping contest. sorry to take up the space with this one, but i figured the host site where this started would be a little miffed about 2 knuckleheads bickering about a case of mistaken identity. knuckleheads, you know what those are right? hahaha, anyways here it is, i might have to have a video made for this guy, sort of a non-enthusiasts guide to identifying a ducati from a quad, and since this is pretty hard for somebody out there, you know, the average RICK, we might have to add other vehicles in the mix as well.
i see that haga is now back at aprilia, on an ex-biaggi ride? not that the average RICK would know, but this marks the return of nitro nori, is this the new rivalry?
by the way, we are working on the new site, which will feature a special RICK section, that helps those ease into the scene without being a RICKHEAD. some of the older archives from the previous site have been dug up, while others are still being hunted, it will take the next month to get our ducs in a row, hahaha ducs...

motorcycling is a big part of my life, you can see by the way i talk about it here, or by the pictures i capture, that my love for the sport and industry is profound. wherever i go i do my best to be an ambassador to the world of motorcycling, trying to bridge the gap between the enthusiast and the common auto driver who dosent know a XR50 from a DESMOSEDICCI.
i love photography, its one way to gain access to bikes and girls, a way to meet new friends and such. in the last couple of years i have been learning CG art and animation. its a fun way to learn something, without the empty guilt feeling that follows hours of video game play. one side affect of CG art is the endless search for props and models(figures or autos), it can become addicting. one area that is seemingly ignored is the bike segment, which motorcyclists are a minority, the general population are seemingly ignorant of one vehicle to the next. can the average "RICK" off the street tell the difference between a GSXR1000 or a CBR1000RR? i seriously doubt it, its just a bike? lots of plastic and thingies right?
now imagine my delight to hunting one day, and coming across a DUCATI QUAD prop, my nipples went hard with delight, now i have something i can stick on my monitor at work and everyone else will be jealous. you see, i am the only ducati owner at work, and in part of our facility we build atv exhausts. so this would have been "over the top" and something i would display proudly. now anyone with an ounce of smarts knows ducati does not, and most likely will never build a quad, but if somebody made a model mash i could be very happy. nope, sit down little man, its not a ducati...
after 2 seconds a realize its only ducati in name and not substance, so i post a thanks for the model, but explain in a very nice "chat tone" that the model is not a ducati, at least not the motor as that is the only thing ducati you can stick on an atv or utv for that matter, and i have seen it done before, just not in this example. i am immediately criticized for being critical, and its just a prop 3d vehicle, which tells me the person typing that statement is obviously not an enthusiast or rides a BMW, hahahaha. so i post that i do appreciate the model, no argument there, it simply is not a DUCATI QUAD. so now the world turns a day or 2 and i get another critical post about my critical post? this guy goes a bit further, in fact telling me to "pick the bone out of my ass" in his reply. wow, this guy has tact. i explain that i wasnt being critical so much as just wanting accuracy, and that perhaps doing some education that might help him understand. nope, it made him post something very disturbing... according to rick68, i am 1 out of 1 million people & i am some guy his daddy warned him about when he was but a wee lad, very disturbing indeed.

ducati does not make a quad, that would be like me posting a mustang and calling it a toyota. aside from that it is a great model, and he does great work. this vehicle is not a ducati, and that is important. ive worked 15 years in the ducati business, sorry if i am picky, i currently work for a large atv exhaust company... no hard feelings?

it has been a little over one year since our last post, many things have changed, most notably the website is gone for the time being.
we had some staff changes, beyond our control, and the crew is now smaller in size, but still breathing, and ready to give it a go.
motorcycle racing in the u.s. has changed some since we were here last, gone are the factories, the big rigs, bright lights etc. todays AMA race will closely resemble a big club race, remember the GSXR nationals?
these days our focus is on the world superbike championship, and motoGP, with a little supermoto thrown in when we can, remember the red bull series?

the AMA has serious issues, and if you thought the old AMA was bad...
fontana showed what the new governing body is all about, and i predict a riders association very soon. the atmosphere is perfect for rider revolt, with mladin and a few others not showing up for the autograph session, the first shots have been fired.
jamie hacking is no steve crevier, but fontana is no pomona either, crappy tracks and shitty management are kindling for the fire. the AMA is bent on delivering a trophy to the showroom of a prominent daytona dealer, riders be damned.

8 days to qatar, sete is already on the no-show list, with shoulder issues. nicky hayden needs to get on the gas, he has top shelf equipment and serious team backing, time to open it up and let it rip. casey stoner and valentino rossi will most certainly be in their own little worlds, but lets once again keep an eye on colin edwards to keep them honest. james toseland is not on the radar and with the new rules for 2009, it does not look good for him at all.
if it was not for the drama with colin and james we would almost be bored with motoGP in anticipation of the impending change to the 250/moto2 class. as long as these things are faster than a supersport bike, and as loud as a motoGP bike, i for one should be quite happy. and behind the scenes drama would surely be deafend by little bikes making a lot of noise.

the first post of 2008. it was an up and down year for the gear-boy crew in 2007, 1 nearly destroyed vehicle, outdated camera gear making life miserable, & a general lack of determination. so what is going to motivate us for 2008? perhaps the start of the superbike season? or motoGP? maybe a little drifting action from irwindale? one thing for sure is this years DEMOLITION DAY is going to be something special. we have real explosives, and 2 ginger bread houses so far to destroy. BOOM! like little kids with our first playboy, we cant wait for that special day. in the meantime we will be out at california speedway for the WERA sprint races tomorrow. you just never know who will be showing up out there. stay tuned, pics will be up as soon as we get back to home base. rock on!

"The younger ones were crying, 'Mom! Mom! Mom!'" said Edward Chun, who witnessed the attack from the Ten-Ten dock, just a couple hundred yards away from Battleship Row.
Chun, 83, had just begun his workday as a civilian pipe fitter when he was thrust into assisting in everything from spraying water on the ships to aiding casualties.
"From the time the first bomb dropped and for the next 15 minutes, it was complete chaos," he said. "Nobody knew what was going on. Everybody was running around like a chicken with their head cut off."
Chun saw the Oklahoma and West Virginia torpedoed by Japanese aircraft. He heard the tapping of sailors trapped in the hulls of sunken ships. He escaped death when Ten-Ten was strafed, leaving behind dead and wounded.
"How I never got hit, I don't know," said Chun, who was later drafted and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. "I'll tell you a secret: When your number comes up, you're going to go. Well, every morning I get up, I change my number."
